Texas Gulf Coast Regional Science Olympiad

Saturday Feb 26th 2022

Lone Star College Cy-Fair

Hosted by the Division I and II [Science and Mathematics]

Welcome!

Welcome to the 2022 Texas Gulf Coast Regional Science Olympiad at Lone Star College Cy-Fair!  It is an honor to have this opportunity to be the hosts for the Regional Science Olympiad.

Due to the large number of students who traditionally register for this event, we cannot wait until the day of the competition to register them. There is an involved process that starts with the processing of the registration forms, and ends with your students having access to the tests.  This is why, this year, it will be extremely important that students and coaches submit the required documentation before the deadlines!

General Information

Competition Format

The 2020 Texas Gulf Coast Regional Science Olympiad will consist of 17 different events for Division B and 17 events for Division C.  Each team will compete in all events for their division.  All events are weighted equally. All events are online and students will compete in groups of 2, in separate locations, but with cell phone contact.

All tests will be available in D2L (Lonestar’s Learning Management System) on the day of the competition but students will have access to practice tests the week before the competition so that they can become familiar with the platform.

All tests will be set up using the proctoring service available in D2L called Lockdown Browser and Respondus monitor.   Chrome books will not work with this proctoring system.  Respondus Monitor requires the student’s computer to have a webcam and the student’s activity, only while taking each test, will be recorded.   Event judges will review footage to check for academic honesty of all participants.

Scoring

Each team will receive points for each event entered.  In each division (B or C), the total number of teams, “n”, will be used to determine the points a team receives in an event.  Each team ranked in the event will receive the number of points equal to its rank, so first place will receive one point, second place two points, etc.  Teams making an honest attempt to participate, but cannot be assigned a raw score because of time, internet outage, computer crash, etc., will be ranked with participation points (“P”) on the score sheet which will be “n” points.  Tie-breaking procedures will be employed in the event of a tie. Teams that do not show up to the event will be given “n+1” points for No-Show (NS).  Teams that are Disqualified (DQ) for behavioral problems, poor sportsmanship, or as provided in the event rules or the testing/cheating policies form will be given “n+2” points.

These scoring rules apply to each event, regardless of the number of teams that actually enter that particular event.  Overall team’s scores will be determined by summing the points for each team for the total events it entered, with the lowest total being assigned first place.  The first tiebreaker procedure for sweepstakes scoring will be “head-to-head” results in common events (i.e., which team outranked the other(s) in more common events.)  In the unlikely event of a three (or more) – way tie, this procedure will be reapplied to continued ties, if appropriate.  The second tie-breaking procedure will be a “head-to-head” rank in a common event.  The event that will be used to apply this tiebreaker will be the first common event on the following list, in this order:

1) Anatomy & Physiology, 2) Fossils, and 3) Reach for the Stars for B division and

1) Anatomy& Physiology, 2) Fossils, and 3) Astronomy for C division.

Behavior/Conduct

The purpose of the Science Olympiad is to encourage student interest in science, to develop teamwork and cooperation and, above all, to have fun, with winning as a bonus.  Unfortunately, in the spirit of being competitive, people’s good nature (students, coaches, parents, and observers) is sometimes unreliable.  For this reason, signed “test-taking/cheating policies” must be submitted (uploaded into a D2L dropbox by each participating team the day the latest on the day before the competition.

Team Substitutes

Additional participants (2 per school team) are ONLY allowed to substitute for an ill team member.  The substitute cannot participate on another team for their school.  S.O. Gulf Coast directors must be notified at least 1h before the start of the first event for which the ill member has signed up previously.  The alternates will be given online access to the test.  The ill team member will not be allowed to take tests on that day.

Appeals Procedures

Teams will be provided with the email address of the appeals judge to submit any appeals, which must be submitted within one hour after the specific event ends.  After this time has elapsed, all results are final and no appeals will be considered. Results of all appeals will be emailed to the filing individuals on the same day of the competition.   Appeal forms will be available in D2L.

Clarifications

All clarifications are based on the State and National clarifications for 2020: https://www.soinc.org/events/rules-clarifications.

Protocol

·                  Parents, coaches, and observers are NOT ALLOWED to interact with the students in any way while the students are taking a test.

·                  Team members must be present in different physical locations. This is to allow students with different social distancing preferences to compete on level ground.

·                  Students must remain in front of the computer webcam used by Respondus Monitor, for the duration of the test. No bathroom breaks are allowed.

·                  Team members are ONLY allowed to use their cellphone to communicate while taking the exam. No other devices can be used while taking a test. Contestants violating these rules will be disqualified.

·                  Contestants may arrive late for an event; however, they WILL NOT be granted any extra time past the scheduled end of the regular event.

·                  If a competitor must leave a test, FOR ANY REASON, both team members must submit and end the session.  The test will NOT be reopened.

·                  Any team, for which a team member loses internet connection for more than 2 min during the test,  will only receive participation points for that event.

Science Olympiad is an international non-profit organization working to improve the quality of science education, increase student interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics and provide recognition of outstanding achievement for students and teachers.

Science Olympiad tournaments are rigorous academic competitions balanced between the various science and engineering disciplines of biology, earth science, chemistry, physics, computers and technology. There is also a balance between events requiring knowledge of facts, concepts, processes, skills and science applications. But beyond the technical knowledge needed to participate in Science Olympiad, participants works on teams and must learn important life skills such as team work, cooperation and creative problem solving.

The Texas Science Olympiad (TSO) tournament is a rigorous academic interscholastic competition that consists of a series of individual and team events which students (grades 6-12) prepare for during the year. The competitions follow the format of popular board games, TV shows, and athletic games. These challenging and motivational events are well balanced between the various science and engineering disciplines of biology, earth science, chemistry, physics, computers, and technology. There is also a balance between events requiring knowledge of facts, concepts, processes, skills, and science applications.
